Ten Game Recap

![]() | • WED OCT 1, 2025 • Roots Run Out of Gas in El Paso’s Surge Oakland Roots (1) @ El Paso Locomotive (3) El Paso, TX - Oakland’s bid to sneak into playoff contention took a gut-punch blow as the Roots fell 3–1 to El Paso in their latest outing. What started as a scrappy match with promise devolved into one-sided dominance by El Paso, who struck early and kept up relentless pressure. Oakland managed to pull one back, off a nifty finish that gave fans hope, but the visitors slammed the door shut with two more goals in the second half to seal the deal. The Roots fought, tracking back, contesting aerials, launching counters, but despite flashes of grit, they never truly wrested control. Their defense, leaky in patches already, cracked under waves of attacks, while the attack lacked enough cohesion to rattle El Paso’s back line. Now they return home with bruised legs and even more bruised playoff dreams. If the Roots want to flip the script, they’ll need sharper structure, more bite, and better finishing in the final third, or this season slides toward “what might have been.” Photo: Golden Bay Times Graphics Dept.
![]() | • SAT SEP 27, 2025 • Roots’ Early Surge Stalls in Phoenix Comeback Oakland Roots (3) @ Phoenix Rising FC (3) Phoenix, AZ - Oakland lit up the early stages in Arizona, racing to a 3–0 lead inside 22 minutes thanks to a quickfire strike from Danny Trejo in the opening minute and a brace from Peter Wilson (assisted first by Panos Armenakas, then by Trejo) to send Phoenix reeling. But the Roots couldn’t keep the momentum. Just before halftime, former Root Charlie Dennis poked home a rebound to make it 3–1, and in the second half he turned the screws, equalizing in the 86th minute from a free kick that trickled off Oakland’s wall and through keeper Spiegel’s hands. In dramatic fashion, Phoenix salvaged a point in stoppage time as a penalty was awarded deep in extra minutes, and Rémi Cabral coolly tucked it into the corner to complete the comeback. The game ended 3–3, a blemish on what should have been a statement performance for Oakland. Still, given favorable league results elsewhere, the draw does little damage to their playoff push, though it stings more because the Roots blew a three goal cushion wrapped in just 90 minutes’ time. ![]() | • SAT SEP 13, 2025 • Roots Halt Home Run But Lose No Honor Oakland Roots (1) @ Charleston Battery (2) Mount Pleasant, SC - Oakland Roots clawed out a thrilling 3-3 draw against Charleston Battery, snapping the home side’s ten-game winning streak and proving they can trade punches with one of the league’s heavyweights. Charleston struck first in the 26th minute when Cal Jennings scored off a chipped pass, but EJ Johnson coolly buried a penalty in first-half stoppage time to pull Oakland level. Just seconds into the second half, Matt Myers restored Charleston’s advantage, only for Peter Wilson to flip the script with a rapid-fire brace in the 52nd and 55th minutes, the first set up by Faysal Bettache and the second delivered by Wolfgang Prentice. With the Roots holding a 3-2 lead, Charleston battled back in the 74th when Rubio Rubín’s effort deflected in off keeper Kendall McIntosh, setting the stage for a frantic final stretch. While the Roots couldn’t quite steal all three points, the performance showcased their resilience, attacking firepower, and willingness to fight toe-to-toe with one of the best, a result that could ignite their push toward the postseason. ![]() | • SAT AUG 23, 2025 • Second-Half Collapse Costs Roots in Kentucky Rally Oakland Roots (1) @ Lexington FC (2) Lexington, KY - Oakland Roots struck early glory, with Neveal Hackshaw sending in a long ball that Peter Wilson elegantly flicked home in the 6th minute—marking his fourth straight regular‑season goal and sparking hopes of controlled mayhem. But what followed was less triumph, more heartburn. Despite holding firm for the better part of the match, the Roots couldn’t contain Lexington SC’s relentless pressure. In the 82nd minute, Cory Burke met a perfectly whipped-in cross with a diving header to level the score. Then, as stoppage time bled away, Joe Hafferty, the architect of the equalizer, transformed into the executioner, tapping in the winner for Lexington in the dying embers. It was a cruel mirror of promise: a dream start undone by late breakdowns, leaving Oakland to lick their wounds and return home staring at another missed chance. ![]() | • SAT AUG 16, 2025 • Electric NorCal Feud Ends In Six-Goal Stalemate Oakland Roots (3) @ Sacramento Republic FC (3) Sacramento, CA - Sacramento and Oakland turned what could’ve been a snooze-fest into a NorCal showdown for the ages. Just ten minutes in, Morey Doner’s teasing cross slipped through the box only to ricochet off Daniel Gomez’s knee and creep over the line, Roots ahead, fans buzzing. But Sacramento, refusing to be overshadowed, leveled from the spot at 18' via Rodrigo Lopez’s majestically curled free kick. The home side then grabbed the lead before half when Blake Willey slipped a slick one touch pass to Cristian Parano, who curled home from a tight angle, sending the Roar packed stadium into a frenzy. Roots, far from done, hit back in first half stoppage time when Peter Wilson pounced on a loose ball and buried the equalizer. The script seemed written for drama, and drama it delivered. With just minutes left, Jurgen Damm rose tall inside the box from a Camden Riley corner to nod Oakland level once more, sealing a 3–3 draw that lived up to every ounce of rivalry heat. No sugar coating, this was an instant classic, gritty, relentless, and for both teams, one point well earned. Photo: Golden Bay Times Graphics Dept.

![]() | • SAT AUG 9, 2025 • Stumbles at the Coliseum Oakland Roots (1) vs Colorado Springs Switchbacks (2) Oakland, CA - Oakland Roots hosted Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at the Coliseum, hoping to shake off a bye week haze, but ended up stumbling in front of their own fans in a 2-1 defeat that feels frustratingly familiar. Colorado Springs took control in burst fashion, with Jonas Fjeldberg nodding home just before halftime, and soon after the break Quentin Huerman doubled the lead. The Roots, still cobwebbed from their week off, roused themselves around the hour mark when Peter Wilson finally cracked the net, reminding everyone they had at least shown up. Four early corner kicks hinted at intent, though the ball rarely found the back of the net during that opening flurry. Discipline on both sides got a little testy as Roots defender Gagi Margvelashvili and a handful of Switchbacks earned yellow cards, nearly turning it into a choreographed caution parade. The turnout, just north of five thousand die hard supporters, saw a Coliseum that looked energetic but ultimately unplugged at the key moments. Another close one slips through Oakland’s fingers, leaving them clutching for momentum and answers. Photo: Golden Bay Times Graphics Dept.
![]() | • SAT JUL 26, 2025 • Roots Unplanted by Jamison’s Solo Stab Oakland Roots (0) vs Orange County SC (1) Oakland, CA - Oakland Roots nearly made the early running, forcing a flashy double save from Orange County’s keeper, Tetsuya Kandono, within the first six minutes, but that spark fizzled into a frustrating afternoon at the Coliseum. The home side mustered several decent openings, including a tame effort from Faysal Bettache, but it was a young Orange County forward, Bryce Jamison, who delivered the knockout: a clean, clinical finish in the 30th minute that ultimately stood as the match-winner. Despite dominating possession and piling on shots, seven on target to Orange County’s four, Oakland couldn’t crack the code, falling 1-0 to their Cal side visitors in the final group fixture of the USL Jägermeister Cup. The Roots’ valiant effort ended their cup campaign with a whimper rather than the fanfare hoped for on their home turf. Photo: Golden Bay Times Graphics Dept.
![]() | • FRI JUL 19, 2025 • Roots Ride Loudoun’s Turf in Confident 2-0 Road Win Oakland Roots (2) @ Loudoun United FC (0) Leesburg, VA - Oakland Roots delivered a smart, gutsy effort at Segra Field, leaving Loudoun United flat-footed and rooted to the spot. Neveal Hackshaw broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute with a clinical finish that whispered “we’ve arrived,” and minutes later Peter Wilson doubled the pleasure in the 27th with a composed strike of his own, proof that Roots can turn pressure into poetry. Meanwhile, Kendall McIntosh played the night off like he was guarding Fort Knox, stacking up seven saves and not flinching once in a shutout that showcased both nerves of steel and reflexes to match. This win marked their fourth victory in five matches and echoed a newfound swagger in their form. Loudoun had the upper hand early, keeping possession and rattling the Roots’ rhythm for the first 20 minutes, but Oakland weathered that storm and found their flow just when it counted. By the final whistle, it wasn’t just a win, it was a statement, and now Oakland returns home riding momentum and confidence where the Coliseum roar will only amplify their growing swagger. ![]() | • SAT JUL 12, 2025 • Phoenix Flies, Roots Wither Oakland Roots (1) vs Phoenix Rising FC (2) Oakland, CA - Oakland Roots’ recent momentum came to an abrupt and sour end as Phoenix Rising FC turned the tables with a second half eruption, handing the Roots a 2–1 defeat at the Coliseum. What started as a promising, buoyant night for Oakland turned into a masterclass in squandered chances and a Phoenix comeback. The Roots struck first in the 27th minute, eking out a slender 1–0 lead that should have been the catalyst for a statement win. Instead, missed openings haunted them and Phoenix smelled blood. Ten minutes into the second half, Ihsan Sacko buried the equalizer, and nine minutes later Charlie Dennis unleashed a stunner from distance to flip the script and seal the comeback victory. It was Phoenix’s first win of 2025 when trailing at halftime and a proud statement came on the road. Meanwhile, the Roots, reeling from their three game win streak snapped, are left licking their wounds and wondering how a night that began with control and flair unraveled under pressure. A mismatch between early promise and late execution, a cautionary tale for fans who saw this as their breakthrough moment. Photo: Golden Bay Times Graphics Dept.
![]() | • SAT JUL 5, 2025 • Roots Keep the Fire Burning Strong Oakland Roots (2) @ Detroit City FC (0) Hamtramck, MI - The Oakland Roots lit up the pitch with a crisp 2-0 victory over Detroit City FC at the Coliseum, delivering their third straight win and turning on the heat when the Fourth wasn’t even on the field. Panos Armenakas, working his midfield magic, sliced through Detroit’s defense early in the second half, his precise pass finding Morey Doner, who made no mistake planting it home with a calm finish that screamed “I belong here.” The night got sweeter when, late in the game, a Detroit defender’s miscue gifted Oakland a second goal, an own goal that felt more like Doner’s brilliance than a fluke. Oaksterdam’s backline stood firm all night, swallowing Detroit’s best efforts and leaning on Kendall McIntosh to swat away any lingering threats. A solid showing from the Roots, smart, unflashy, efficient, with just enough flair to leave us grinning. No showboating, just straightforward, earned style, exactly what the Bay expects.
