Game Recap

• THU OCT 2, 2025 • Overtime Grit Carries 49ers Past Rams San Francisco 49ers (26) @ Los Angeles Rams (23) Inglewood, CA - The 49ers pulled off a gritty 26–23 overtime win over the Rams in a game that felt more like a chess match than a shootout. Mac Jones, thrust into the limelight with Brock Purdy out, tossed for 342 yards and two touchdowns. Kendrick Bourne showed up big time with 10 catches for 142 yards, stepping up when the offense needed someone with grit. Christian McCaffrey added his own thunder with 139 total yards and a touchdown to keep pressure on Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Matthew Stafford lit up the scoreboard with 389 passing yards and three touchdowns but could not deliver when it hurt most. The Rams’ playoff hopes nearly surged with a late drive, only to be derailed first by a goal-line fumble from Kyren Williams, then by a gutsy fourth-and-one stop in overtime at the 11. Eddy Pineiro’s 41-yard field goal in overtime sealed it. The 49ers, battered by injuries but refusing to fold, showed serious depth, fight, and coaching that can beat high-profile opponents. • SUN SEP 28, 2025 • When Turnovers Talk, Silence the Offense San Francisco 49ers (21) vs Jacksonville Jaguars (26) Santa Clara, CA - The 49ers’ perfect start hit a stumbling block as Jacksonville edged out a 26–21 win in a sloppy, high-stakes duel. San Francisco actually outgained the Jaguars in total yardage but couldn’t outmaneuver mistakes, and that proved costly. Brock Purdy passed for over 300 yards with two touchdowns, while Christian McCaffrey piled up 141 total yards (with a receiving score), but Purdy also threw two interceptions and coughed up a fumble after a sack by former Niner Arik Armstead, who wasn’t shy about making life difficult. Jacksonville’s defense forced four turnovers and special teams struck hard as Parker Washington rambled 87 yards for a punt-return touchdown, and the 49ers also yielded a 54-yard kickoff return. What might sting most is that despite 12 Jacksonville penalties for 90 yards, San Francisco couldn’t seize control. In the waning moments, Armstead’s strip-sack sealed the deal. Coach Shanahan voiced frustration, and Purdy admitted he simply needs to be better. The loss drops San Francisco to 3–1 and puts a glaring spotlight on how turnovers and lapses in special teams can undo even a dominant yardage. performance. Photo: Getty Images
• SUN SEP 14, 2025 • 49ers Escape with Gritty Win Over Saints in Close Call San Francisco 49ers (26) @ New Orleans Saints (23) New Orleans, LA - San Francisco edged out New Orleans 26-21 in a game that tested both depth and resilience, with backup quarterback Mac Jones stepping into the spotlight and delivering three touchdown passes on 26-of-39 passing for 279 yards. The 49ers offense sputtered at times with early turnovers, but Jones showed poise under pressure and kept the attack balanced enough to secure points when needed. The Saints pushed back behind rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler, who also threw three touchdowns and connected on 25 of 34 passes for 206 yards, while Alvin Kamara nearly stole the show with 99 rushing yards that fueled a late surge. In the end, San Francisco’s defense sealed the win as Fred Warner forced a critical fumble and relentless pressure from Nick Bosa and the defensive line denied New Orleans’ comeback bid. The 49ers absorbed injuries along the way, including the loss of fullback Kyle Juszczyk to a concussion and guard Ben Bartch to an ankle injury, yet still managed to gut out a victory that kept them unbeaten at 2-0. For the Saints, the search for their first win of the season continues, while San Francisco proved once again that even when shorthanded, it can rely on grit and depth to get the job done. • SUN SEP 7, 2025 • Tonges’ Big Moment Lifts 49ers Over Seahawks in Season Opener San Francisco 49ers (17) @ Seattle Seahawks (13) Seattle, WA - The San Francisco 49ers edged out the Seattle Seahawks 17-13 in a tense opener that showed both promise and fragility. The offense got rolling early when Brock Purdy connected with George Kittle on a 5-yard touchdown, but Kittle’s day ended prematurely with a hamstring injury. Seattle responded before halftime and edged ahead in the third quarter, highlighted by a field goal that gave them a 13-10 lead. With momentum shifting, the 49ers leaned on grit rather than glamour. Running back Christian McCaffrey put up 142 total yards despite carrying a calf issue. Then, with 1:34 left on the clock, third string tight end Jake Tonges, yes, third string, caught a deflected pass from Purdy in the end zone for his first career touchdown, turning the game around. It was also a clutch defensive moment as a hit on Seattle’s final drive caused a fumble that sealed the deal for San Francisco. Not everything was pretty, Purdy threw two interceptions and the special teams had miscues, but this was a “win ugly” performance. Given the roster injuries and shaky moments, the 49ers showed they still have that backbone. Photo: Getty Images
• SAT AUG 23, 2025 • Homecoming Hit San Francisco 49ers (30) vs Los Angeles Chargers (23) Santa Clara, CA - San Francisco’s final exhibition delivered a spicy little victory, as the 49ers edged the Chargers 30-23 in a game that was equal parts sloppy and scintillating. Trey Lance, making his awkward return to the Bay, must’ve forgotten how to throw, going 5-for-8 for a skimpy 38 yards, producing zero offense and plenty of punts. But offense eventually arrived courtesy of Tanner Mordecai, who connected on a sharp 22-yard touchdown pass to Terique Owens—fitting, seeing as he’s Hall of Famer Terrell Owens’s kid. Still, the game’s most electric moment came from the blue when linebacker Curtis Robinson snagged a DJ Uiagalelei pass and scampered 32 yards to the house with 6:06 left, delivering a knockout punch. It was one of those games that felt like a scrappy backyard brawl, piled with punts and big plays in equal measure, but in the end the 49ers prevailed thanks to opportunistic defense and just enough offense to sneak out with a win. • SAT AUG 16, 2025 • Moody’s Missile Caps A Gritty Niners Stunner San Francisco 49ers (22) @ Las Vegas Raiders (19) Las Vegas, NV - The 49ers edged the Raiders in a real nail-biting showdown, powered by five clutch field goals from rookie kicker Jake Moody, including a jaw-dropping 59-yard bomb as time expired that lifted them to a 22-19 preseason triumph. Offensively, Brock Purdy and Ricky Pearsall opened with a sleek display of chemistry, driving into scoring range early, though Mac Jones later encountered turbulence when he threw a timely interception that led to a Raiders touchdown. The ground game showed flashes as Corey Kiner’s burst was cut short by injury, forcing veterans Ke’Shawn Vaughn and Jeff Wilson Jr. to pick up the slack, and Wilson responded with a power run into the end zone. San Francisco’s defense stiffened when needed, contributing two interceptions and several sacks, while special teams anchored the finale with Moody’s heroics. Yet the win came with a price as key injuries to right guard Dominick Puni and running backs, including Kiner’s ankle and Taylor Jr.’s shoulder, cast a long shadow, leaving the team hopeful they will heal in time. • SAT AUG 9, 2025 • Broncos Roll Past Niners in 30-9 Preseason Wake-Up Cal Bay Area Panthers (9) vs Denver Bronchos (30) Santa Clara, CA - The Niners leaned into their preseason opener with a punchy first act as Mac Jones and rookie receiver Jordan Watkins hooked up for a blitzing 50 yard play, setting the stage for a slick eight play, 71 yard drive crowned by Patrick Taylor Jr.’s five yard touchdown rush. But the golden glow faded fast as Denver surged back and Jarrett Stidham orchestrated two touchdown strikes, backed by reliable kicks from Wil Lutz to ultimately deliver a 30 9 verdict. The story was not all doom, though, as Chase Lucas sent a jolt through the crowd by blitzing into the Broncos’ end zone for a safety, and San Francisco’s second string defense, under Robert Saleh’s aggressive scheming, turned Bo Nix’s unit into a collection of frustrated misfires. A rough outing, yes, but with flashes of zip from Watkins, a glimpse of defensive grit, and Shanahan’s offense showing initial spark, there were clues that the real story is yet to be written.
